What
is Yoga?
The
Sanskrit word yoga translates to "union." Practicing yoga
refers to the practice of unifying the physical body, the mind and the
spirit (represented by the breath). Hatha yoga involves a series of
physical postures called asanas. Through its practice, we work to tame
the mind, by focusing on the breath, and clear the body of any blockages
that impede the flow of prana, or life energy. As a result, a practitioner
feels physically and energetically cleansed and refreshed after a Hatha
yoga practice.
Is
Hatha yoga competitive?
Hatha
yoga is non-competitive. Everyone is encouraged to work to the best
of his or her ability each time s/he comes to the mat. A Hatha yoga
practice is individual and will be affected by physical conditions,
life situations and patterns of tension in the body and breath. No ones
practice will look quite the same as anothers nor will
it necessarily look the same from one day to another.
What
are the benefits?
The
benefits of a Hatha yoga practice will be noticed immediately in a general
sense of well being. The long-term benefits, however, unfold with regular
practice. Some include an improved quality and ease of the breath, a
release of habitual, physical tension and a deeper knowledge and acceptance
of oneself. The practice of Hatha yoga enhances every aspect of ones
life.
What
if I have an injury or medical condition?
Everyone,
regardless of physical limitations, can practice some type of Hatha
yoga. It is, however, important to address any medical or physical conditions
with the instructor prior to class. This will enable the instructor
to provide modifications or alternatives for certain postures, if necessary.
What
do I need in order to participate?
Yoga
is practiced in bare feet and comfortable clothes in which it is easy
to move. We do recommend the purchase of a sticky mat, which is designed
for yoga practice. The most important thing to bring to class is an
open, non-judgmental mind and a sense of adventure. Beginning a yoga
practice involves embarking on a journey of svadyaya, or self-study.
It is a time to tune into the workings of the mind and the breath and
bring them back into harmony. It is a time to move moment to moment,
breath to breath and to surrender to the flow of life.
